Message Listening with headphones through the J&S allows you to hear even the smallest tick of knock extremely clearly.
The J&S can be set as a monitor ONLY with LED's, this allows listening with headphones with no knock control. J&S can also be set to monitor WITH knock control, you can adjust the amount of timing pulled, as well as individual cyl's, or all cyls.
When tuning the cars, you slowly bring up the power until you find very light knock tick with perfect air fuel, if a tick is in just one spot, you lower ignition timing in that spot and see if the rest of the power can be expanded.(The light tick in no way could be heard with human ears) If you start getting light tick in a few wide spread areas, you know you have reached the threshold of knock for the octane. From there you lower and boost and timing to offer a margin of safety and advise the customer of the limits for the fuel.
If the car does not have a J&S or stand alone that has knock control, you have to leave a margin for safety.
If you try to have the stock ECU retard for the knock at peak torque or above, nothing happens as can be seen when datalogging with a Nissan Consult, or listening with headphones on a J&S.
If you change the TT min to lower than 255, it causes tuning issues because the stock knock system simply sucks, especially on a built engines. Reason exist why tuners do things to different parameters.
If you use a J&S unit, turn it on, the J&S retards and knock noise you hear in the headphones goes away.
You can increase power farther, you can see the J&S do it's magic, you simply hear the lightest tick, it runs clean from there and the LEDS show the J&S retarding the final signal.
